What Happens When Kids Spend a Week Without Their Phones

"Camper making friends during phone-free week at Christian summer camp"

Your child was made for more than a screen — and somewhere, you already know it.

You’ve set the limits. You’ve had the conversations. You’ve watched the same device you handed them for safety and communication ease become the thing that’s quietly crowding everything else out. That’s just what tech companies have designed them to do (to each of us).

The rules help. But they’re not enough on their own.

The problem isn’t the amount screen time. It’s what screen time is replaces.

Every hour on a device is an hour not spent doing the things that actually shape a kid: navigating real friendships, trying things that are hard, sitting around a fire with people who know them — not their profile.

The confidence your child needs doesn’t come from likes. It comes from doing something hard and working through it. From making a real friend. From hearing, in a quiet moment away from the noise, that they are known and loved and made for a purpose.

That kind of growth needs space. And space is hard to find when the phone is always there.

Pine Lake has been creating that environment for 60 years

At Pine Lake Fellowship Camp, we’ve watched so many kids walk through the same transformation.

Campers arrive at registration on Monday a little guarded — some anxious, some unsure, some quietly convinced this whole thing was their parents’ idea. By Wednesday, something has shifted. They’re laughing with kids they’d never met. They’re trying things that scared them just two days ago. They’re asking questions around the campfire that never seem to come up in other contexts.  We have heard so many Trailblazers campers (ages 14-17) tell us how much better their week was without their phone.

Here’s what a week at Pine Lake does that devices can’t:

  1. It restores real friendship. Camp friendships don’t form through a scrolled feed — they form through shared experience. When you sleep in the same cabin, eat at the same table, and soar down the zip line while friends cheer you on, you bond fast and deep. We hear this from parents every single year — especially the ones who were most worried:

“My girl is very shy and I was afraid she wouldn’t enjoy it because she doesn’t know anyone. She said she even came out of her comfort zone. Seeing the excitement in her face — she can’t wait to go back again next year.” Summer Camp mom

That’s not a one-time story. That’s what we watch happen, week after week, summer after summer.

  2. It builds genuine confidence. Not the kind that comes from a highlight reel. At camp, kids try hard things — and when they get through them, they know something about themselves that no one can take away.

“As soon as I picked him up I could see a difference in the way he spoke and acted. He had more confidence and maturity. We went through his notebook from his camp Bible lessons. He truly listened and took in more from his time at camp than I could have ever hoped for.” Summer Camp mom

One week. One notebook. A parent who couldn’t believe what they were reading.

  3. It creates space for faith to grow. We believe every child is created for more — known by name and loved by God. That message lands differently when the noise from influencers and replaced by authentic summer staff who care about each camper. Some of the most significant spiritual moments in a young person’s life happen at camp.
  4. It gives them a week to just be a kid. No performance. No persona. No feed to maintain. Just a lake, a cabin full of new friends, a s’more (or two) around the campfire, and enough room to figure out who they actually are.

One parent put it better than we ever could try:

“Sarah (not her real name) came back so much happier than I have seen her in forever. She was singing again and on fire for the Lord. She came back being my sweet Sarah that I have missed so much.”

One week is all it takes to make a difference.

Summer camp at Pine Lake Fellowship Camp isn’t a vacation from real life. It’s an investment in the person your child is becoming and what/who draws their attention.  Don’t let it be the screens .

One week away from the noise. One week of real friendships, real challenge, and a real encounter with a God who made them for something bigger than a screen.

Your child was made for more. Our kids are made for more! Come find out what that looks like.

Celebrating What God Has Done in 2025!

This year at Pine Lake, we witnessed how God uses this place to restore people—body, mind, and spirit. Throughout 2025, stories of campers, families, churches, and pastors came to camp to rest, grow, and fellowship, and left with those needs met!

Summer Camp was filled with holy moments—campers growing in confidence, purpose, and the knowing that they are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Summer theme: Psalm 139: 13-14). Dads & Kids Weekend created space for families to reconnect without distraction, building memories around campfires, canoes, and worship. Even long-standing traditions like the Camp Sale brought our community together in generosity, joy, and purpose!

Mission-Driven:
Each summer, we see kids hungry for guidance from positive role models to help them in a walk with Christ. In a world full of noise and distraction, Pine Lake Fellowship Camp is that place! Here, campers and guests can slow down, hear God’s voice, and discover purpose. Camp offers a combination of Christian role models, discipleship, adventure, teamwork, and time in God’s creation to shape their lives. “My child came home closer to God and more confident in who they are,” shared one parent.

Another parent shared that her children grew in confidence and loved the thrill of the zip line. One counselor’s simple influence was measured after camp when his camper got a haircut in the same style as him! Camp can be measured in many ways but ultimately…

The Impact is Real!

Since 1966, thousands of campers have attended camp at Pine Lake. This legacy continues today as we celebrate 60 years of ministry in 2026. One summer volunteer returned to camp for the first time in 25 years and remarked, “I was overwhelmed with joy, memories, and the presence of God.” Thank you for making these moments possible.

More Impactful Moments in 2025:

  • Scholarships: A record 56 campers received scholarships totaling $8,800. Thank You, donors!
  • Restoration: One local church scheduled 80 personal retreats for staff to pray, rest, and plan.
  • Summer Camp: 314 Campers attended Overnight & Day Camp! 34 campers made decisions to follow Jesus Christ!
  • 4,000+ overnight stays from campers & guests at Pine Lake, including 6 new guest groups!
  • Camp Sale –Supporters rallied and raised over $29,500!
  • New Staff: Russell & Kyra Kennedy joined our year-round staff as Suzanne Opel and Joslyn Broome left to begin new careers. Thank you, Suzanne & Joslyn!

Looking Ahead: Two Key Needs

1. Raise $25,000 to end the calendar year.
Donations provide 30% of our annual budget. Today, we are two-thirds of the way there! Your gift will help Pine Lake begin its 60th year on strong footing.

2. Launching “60 for 60!”
Pine Lake celebrates 60 years of ministry! To mark this milestone, “60 for 60,” is a yearlong effort to welcome 60 new monthly donors to Campfire Keepers.

Monthly gifts of $12, $30, $50, $100, or $200+ provide steady support that fuels summer camp and sustains retreat ministry.

Become one of the first “60 for 60” partners!

I want to be a monthly donor!

Thank you! Your generosity and prayers empower Pine Lake to carry forward the mission of reconciliation with God, nature, and one another. Thank you for being a part of the work God is doing at camp!

With Gratitude,

Camp Sale 2025 Recap

(Updated: 10/16/2025)

Camp Sale 2025 is a wrap — and what a day it was!

Partnered with beautiful weather, stunning quilts, and delicious food, hundreds of friends and supporters made their way—some from across the country—to the 42nd Annual Camp Sale at Pine Lake Fellowship Camp. Whether they were local travelers or part of the faithful few who drove over 1,000 miles, all came together around one purpose: to rally behind the mission of Pine Lake Camp.

The baked goods table was nearly emptied by noon, while the aroma of jambalaya and seafood gumbo—thanks to Jonathan Bunn, Wayne Comardelle, and crew—filled the air. Friends from decades past reunited and shared stories of summers gone by, while current campers played games and enjoyed time at “their favorite place in the world.”

By 1:00 p.m., anticipation filled the air as the auction began with dozens of lots up for bid. The 2025 Camp Quilt, a stunning piece pieced by Carrie Geil and lovingly stitched at the Camp Quilt Retreat in April, sold for $1,000, making it the highest-priced item of the day! So many hands and hearts came together to make it possible.

As of October 8, 2025, Pine Lake Fellowship Camp has raised over $27,500 toward our $28,500 goal. We thank God for His continued provision!

“I’m amazed at the way God continues to provide for camp,” said Jonathan Bunn, maker of the superb jambalaya. “There is no other explanation for the blessing that Camp Sale is to PLFC.”

A Reflection of Faith and Gratitude

I’ve been re-reading the book, A Spirituality of Fundraising by Henri Nouwen. In it, he writes:

“Fundraising is proclaiming what we believe in such a way that we offer other people an opportunity to participate with us in our vision and mission.”

That’s exactly what Camp Sale is all about. Every quilt stitched, donut rolled, ticket sold, and bid placed is an act of partnership in God’s mission through Pine Lake—a ministry that helps people be renewed and reconciled to God, nature, and one another.

We are deeply grateful to every volunteer, donor, baker, and bidder who made this year’s event possible. Your service and generosity are tangible expressions of God’s love. THANK YOU!

The Power of a Team

Challenge Course at Pine Lake

Challenge Course at Pine Lake

Last month, a small group of middle school-aged boys came to Pine Lake to participate in a team-building session on the challenge course. We began with warm-up games and gradually moved into more physical challenges on the elements. I was astonished at how quickly they jumped in and accomplished their goals.

After each of the four elements, we paused to debrief through open-ended questions.  Their self-reflection was deeper and more insightful than most groups. One young man said, “Sometimes you go through things that are difficult, but you have to keep moving forward.” Another added, “My teammate was falling, so I had to steady and catch him.”

Why was I so surprised by their success and responses?

You see, I was aware these boys came from difficult backgrounds. Subconsciously, I had expected the session to be quite difficult to facilitate. I was guarded and ready to be a “hard-nosed” facilitator, ready to push for rule compliance and prod for engagement. But that’s not what they needed. And that’s not what they gave.

In just two hours, these young men set goals, encountered communication breakdowns, struggled to work together—and then overcame those struggles on their own by refocusing, listening, and leaning on one another. At the end of our time together, I felt like I was the one who learned the most.  What was the foundational element of their success?

Vulnerability.

Patrick Lencioni, in The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, writes that the first and most foundational dysfunction is the absence of trust. “The fear of being vulnerable prevents team members from building trust with each other.” These boys had already worked through the first and hardest piece: the willingness to be vulnerable. There was no posturing. No pretending. They were only themselves.  As we walked to the first challenge, and along the way, they began to share pieces of their stories of homelessness, loss, and trauma.  That’s not usually something you share with someone within the first 10 minutes of meeting someone, but I felt closer to these guys because of their honesty.

2025 Summer Staff

2025 Summer Staff

Over the past year, we’ve been preparing and building a summer staff team to serve over 300 campers this summer. And over the past two weeks of training and campers arriving, we have witnessed this team connect with one another on a deep level.   Any team must have the courage to be vulnerable—to share not only our personal and collective highs, but also our lows, and to lean on one another when we’re not at 100%. Praise God for bringing these 2025 staff together and their courage to share this experience together.

And Scripture also reminds us about the importance of teams:

  • “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.”Ecclesiastes 4:9 10
  • “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.”Galatians 6:2

Please pray for our 2025 summer staff team.  That we would continue to be a community that builds on trust in our relationships with others—fueled by Christ-centered vulnerability and the purpose of carrying the message of Christ forward!

The Joy of a First Visit!

Welcoming someone to Pine Lake Fellowship Camp for the first time brings a unique joy. Whether a camper steps onto the grounds with wide-eyed wonder, a parent envisions the space where their child will grow, or a retreat guest arrives seeking rest, their experience at Pine Lake becomes unforgettable.

The journey to camp often begins with a Google search, a phone call, a connection at a promotional event, or a recommendation from a part of the Pine Lake family. While the website and social pages offer a glimpse, nothing compares to driving up Pine Lake Road and stepping foot at camp.

Recently, I toured several group leaders around camp. As we explored trails and facilities, Pine Lake’s founding story naturally came up, and we discussed the history, purpose, and mission of camp! Pointing out a spot like the campfire circle on the island, where generations have gathered for worship, laughter, and quiet reflection, connected with these tour leaders as they envisioned their group (youth/church/family) experiencing the same thing!

Another frequent connecting point is the leader’s desire to slow down...recognizing their (and their group’s) need for retreat. In a world filled with noise and distractions, Pine Lake offers something different: the whisper of wind through Mississippi pines, the ripple of water on the lake, and the warmth of a campfire shared with friends. Away from screens and schedules, guests and campers find true retreat, rediscovering the peace that nature, time with God, and community so freely give.

A first visit to Pine Lake sparks a deeper connection—a place to restore, retreat, and be transformed through Christ. If you’ve experienced this same joy, you know the impact it can have. Who in your life needs this kind of experience? Invite them to visit, attend an event, or join you for a retreat.
You never know how one visit might change a life!

Tiny Seeds Bring Tremendous Impact

Summer Camp 2023
Summer Camp 2023

As 2023 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey we've shared at Pine Lake Fellowship Camp in 2023! It has been a year of growth, transformation, and nurturing of faith for campers and guests. Just as a mustard seed starts small and grows into a mighty tree, a camper growing in Christ can do great things!

Tiny Seeds Bring Tremendous Impact:

Mark” (not his real name) was unsure if he wanted to ride the zip line. It was out of his comfort zone, but he knew that taking a refreshing ride down the line would be a thrill, scary as it was.  As he geared up, he watched several campers calmly climb up the ladder and take off without hesitation, but Mark was nervous.  It came easy for those campers, but not for him.  As Mark’s turn drew closer, the facilitator encouraged him and gave directions all the way up to the top of the platform before “hooking in” to the 300’ zip line.  It looked even scarier from up there!  He had completed each step but was having trouble garnering the last bit of courage required to push off from the platform. Then, his cabinmates started to chant his name…”Mark! Mark! Mark!  You can do it Mark!”  With that, Mark launched from the platform and flew down the line! His cabinmates encouragement was the tiny seed that transformed Mark’s week with newfound confidence. His demeanor changed after that moment! Mark walked a little taller and became more engaged in each activity and with his cabinmates. These tiny seeds bring about tremendous impact!  The transformative love of Christ impacts each camper in many ways!

More Mustard Seed Moments:

  • Camper Parent: “My daughter loves camp and getting to grow in Christ with others. She shares her experience with others, and she wants to become a future leader at Pine Lake!”
  • Largest Summer Camp attendance! (Overnight Camp: 191 | Day Camp: 115 | Good News Fellowship: 68)
  • 94 campers made a first-time decisions or recommitments to follow Jesus Christ!
  • 24 summer staff experienced “mustard seed” moments while sharing the love of Christ!

Will You Consider a Year-End Donation?

The need/goal is $25,000 by December 31 to balance the budget going into 2024!

We invite you to consider a part in “planting mustard seeds” for the coming year.  A financial gift of support makes moments of tremendous growth possible. Thank you! I hope you have a Merry Christmas!
